Opening Reception: "Transition" by Rich Tomasello

Please join us for the opening reception of "Transition" featuring work by Rich Tomasello. The opening event is this Wednesday from 6-9pm at iPrintfromHome.

Find out more: facebook.com/event

From Rich:
Transition aims to visually document the path my work has taken over the past four years.

My earlier work consisted of pastel and ink wash drawings that featured two recurring figures: one with a bandaged head (the hero non-conformist) and the other with a rhino horn (the violent and oppressive). This work, inspired by concepts in the play Rhinoceros of conformity and violence in society was deeply personal to me. The work connected with some viewers in ways I had not expected. It became personal for them too. As more people shared their stories of power struggles, masculinity, or bullying, my old wounds of experiencing physical and verbal violence firsthand began to heal. It was a bit therapeutic.

In 2012, my Rhinoceros pen and ink drawings of factory made rhinos and packages bearing the rhino label, transitioned to a completely new and different path of art materials and media. Last year, I began using Photoshop to create detailed and authentic packaging for action figures and sculptures. Some of these figures are appropriately branded “Rhino Toys”. In these new works I was worried less about how to fit them into the Rhinoceros mold of bandages and horns, and more focused on the issue or topic they addressed. These works were made in direct response to school shootings, Syrian conflict, gender roles, and other current events. Gas masks, soldiers, quarantined children, and absurd or violent toys became new vehicles for the recurring themes that have always been present in my work, that of power, or the lack thereof. In essence, the work became more universal and I hope, equally as visceral.

Complimentary snacks and drinks. Free and open to the public. Please feel free to share this event.

Looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

Thanks,

What, How & Why: A Closer Look - Featuring Phil Pantano

At iPrintfromHome.com, we work with artists and photographers from across the United States and Canada. We're inspired everyday by the images that they send to us and by the stories they share.
In our "What, How & Why" interview series, we take a closer look at some of these fascinating people.

We've asked each participating artist or photographer three simple questions:

1. What do you do?
2. How do you do it?
3. Why do you use iPrintfromHome.com?

Please read on to find out more about Phil Pantano.

Phil Pantano
Photographer
Buffalo, NY

What do you do?
I am a photographer from the Buffalo, NY area. I started taking photos in 1968 when I was 12 years old. My mom had a decent Japanese camera and I started playing around with it and also developing and printing. I continued throughout the years, but not doing any serious work.

I got back into it about 2 years ago and have been obsessed. I am a history buff so I concentrated on taking photos of older industrial facilities that have been untouched by vandalism and graffiti. I like to see it as if a door had been shut 50 years ago and I am opening it back up after all these years. Being a fan of black & white classic movies and TV shows, including Alfred Hitchcock, shows in some of my darker more dramatic shots. I think a photo taken on an overcast and cloud dark day tells more of a story.

Up until this past Winter, I told myself that I would never take pictures of people. That was a big fear of mine. To overcome that fear I started work on a portrait project, The American Worker. I felt that if I could shoot it in my dark and dramatic style, it could work. It turned out to be a success and now I am constantly reading and watching videos on how to improve my portrait shooting.

How do you do it?

I currently shoot with a Canon 5D Mark III. I look for detail, lighting and shadows. It’s hard to describe but when I look at the subject I am photographing, I “see” what the end result will be. After that I process the photo in Photoshop to fine tune the detail and make it look how I “saw” it when I took the shot. I think selective lighting can “tell the story” the best.

Why do you use iPrintfromHome.com?
Why wouldn’t I? I am so lucky to have a fantastic place right in my backyard! I order my prints and pick them up the next day…customers order from my website and they are shipped the next day…customer service is spot on. When I’ve had a problem (because of my mistake) they have been quick to point it out and make sure it gets resolved before it goes too far. On top of that, quality is top notch and pricing is very reasonable. I have never had a complaint from any of my customers. One of my top selling photos is a highly detailed 20x30” print that always wows at any show we have done

VIDEO: Ordering Non-Standard Sized Prints

We often get phone calls from customers who need a custom sized print, either to fit an existing frame or because they want their prints to be the same size as their original artwork. Although we don't explicitly offer custom sized prints, with a little file prep work, you can get any size you need. In this video Sara explains how to prepare a file to order a non-standard sized print.

You can also find file preparation instructions in this article in the section titled "Ordering Non-Standard Sized Prints".

As you know, we take customer feedback very seriously and most of the changes made around here are based on customer requests. If there is a particular size that you find yourself needing, please contact us to let us know. If there is enough interest, we'll add the size to our site.

Thanks,

VIDEO: DIY Photo Cards & Saying Thanks

In this video, Sara demonstrates how to make DIY Photo Cards.

As you know, Mother's Day, Father's Day and graduation season are just around the corner. This year, instead of sending a generic greeting card with a message penned by some unknown copywriter, take the time to create something personal, beautiful and showcase your work while you're at it.

We make cards like those featured in the video all year round. Because we're making them ourselves, we can make as few or as many as we need, and choose the perfect image for each occasion. Check out the video and give it a try. We think you'll be happy with the results.

Not only will you have a high quality photo greeting card to send out to friends and family, but you'll also be featuring your own imagery. One of the simplest things you can do to advance your artistic career is to start sending your work into the world. Let people see the images that you've created. Once you do, you'll be surprised by how quickly you'll start hearing from people who want to see more.

Most of the changes we make around here, like this one, come as a result of listening and responding to customer feedback.  If you have any questions or comments about our services, we'd love to hear what you have to say.  Please click here to send us an e-mail.

What, How & Why: A Closer Look - Featuring Christina Laing

At iPrintfromHome.com, we work with artists and photographers from across the United States and Canada. We're inspired everyday by the images that they send to us and by the stories they share.
In our "What, How & Why" interview series, we take a closer look at some of these fascinating people.

We've asked each participating artist or photographer three simple questions:

1. What do you do?
2. How do you do it?
3. Why do you use iPrintfromHome.com?

Please read on to find out more about Christina Laing.

Christina Laing
Photographer
Buffalo, NY

What do you do?
I am a photographer, recent graduate of Buffalo State College, and resident artist at the 464 Gallery in Buffalo, NY. My work documents what happens following the rise and fall of industry- the decline in population and the growth of crime, vandalism, and architectural abandonment. When industry collapses, factories, churches, homes, and schools are reduced to ruins and decay spreads like a cancer. Each image is a visual record of how the community has changed over time, a portrait that will exist long after any demolition, arson, or structural collapse.

How do you do it?
While I do occasionally shoot film, a majority of my work is shot digitally and processed with a very subtle use of HDR software. I shoot with the widest focal length my lens will allow in any particular space. My goal is to capture the feeling of awe, amazement, and sadness that I am overcome with when I see these spaces, and pass those feelings along to the viewer.

Why do you use iPrintfromHome.com?
I use iprintfromhome because I believe that when you support small, independently-owned businesses, you are investing in your community, and nothing makes me happier than to invest in Buffalo.  Additionally, the quality of iPrintfromHome's printing is perfect every time. I have never had a single problem and they're always quick and eager to help with any questions I may have.
